Kindergarten teacher with a passion for digital technology
I am passionate about being connected to the world of digital technology. I want to specialise in music production and photo & video editing. My name is Michael Deng, aged 25. I am single. I come from Western Equatoria, South Sudan. I fled my home country in the year 2000 due to insecurity caused by the civil war. I moved into Kakuma Refugee Camp in search for a safe place. Living in this camp is faced by a lot of challenges like unfavorable weather conditions, inadequate financial support and low access to tertiary education opportunities. However, I still like it because the camp holds my childhood memories because it is where I grew up. Most of my daily activities in the camp are going to school, editing pictures, creating songs & videos, and watching and listening to music. I am specifically interested in these activities because I am passionate about being connected to the world of digital technology. I want to specialise in music production, photo & video editing in the future. In addition, my engagement to these activities keeps me busy and motivates me to learn and discover new ideas that are beneficial to me and society. I love learning and acquiring new skills that are beneficial. I currently work as an Early Years Education’s teacher in Kakuma Refugee Camp. Besides teaching, I do online marketing. My main dream for the future is to be a Human Rights Activist and a Peace Builder in society. Ever since I identified this dream, I have been motivated to work hard in order to make it become a reality. Although I love my home country, I wish to live in a safer place with more opportunities where I can accomplish my dreams. Like the USA. Life in my home country is quite unsafe because conflict and violence may arise anytime. I prefer to live in a place where I can start a foundation so that when I become successful I would build an organization that is capable of empowering others in the future. My personal dream is to work as a social worker so that I get a chance to serve others like the UN does. For the rest of Kakuma residents, both the refugees and the host communities, I wish to see them overcome this habit of dependency and become independent. They should engage in life transformative activities such as business, agriculture, and online businesses. Kakuma is a multinational community that is hosting people of different types of social groups of people that are living like brothers and sisters. I believe that refugees are people like others who have ambitions, dreams, and who need opportunities and support in order to achieve them. My dearest wish is for the world to see refugees with this same view. Having hosted and given me some opportunities, I think Kakuma is a home like any other and which I should be proud of.
