Dreams in a refugee camp: Becoming a superstar model like Adut Akech!
Born in the refugee camp (my dad died from his war injuries) I now focus on modelling. I want to live in Paris and become a superstar! My name is Biliny Manyang, 22 years old South Sudanese and single. I was born in Kakuma, raised and lived all my life in Kakuma Refugee Camp so far. My parents came here in the year 1992 due to insecurity reasons in my home country. Before they moved to Kakuma, my father was leading a group of young soldiers. I consider Kakuma as my home. My parents gave birth to five children, three boys and two girls. I am the third born in the family. In 2009, I lost my dad. He passed away as a result of the injuries that he sustained from the war when he was serving in the liberation army. Since then, my siblings and I remained under the care of a single mother. It was not easy but she managed. In Kakuma, I have learned many things, I was once a soccer player but I later retired playing football and joined the modelling industry. I started my modelling in 2018. My friends noticed my height and encouraged me. They were also saying I got a wonderful body shape for modelling and they advised me to practice. Since then, I have been working hard on it and I became the second runner's up in the 'South Fame' modelling contest held in Kakuma in 2018. Last year, I also participated in Kakuma Got Talent competition and my group and I became second. This really motivated me to continue and currently I am working hard to perform better. I strongly believe I am talented in modelling. My dream now is to be a super model in the modelling industry like Adut Akech, a young refugee model whom I greatly look up to. She is great. I like her because of her courage, hard work and determination. She is a refugee like me but she made it to the top to become the Miss World 2017-2018. She overcame all the odds, obstacles on her way and her refugee status to become role model to other young refugees in the world who share similar dreams with her. Most of my daily activities are practicing modelling and doing some physical exercises at home to maintain my body fitness. I have some few friends who scout me during the modelling practice like Joan Okorodudu and Chol Bior, Joan is Nigerian-American who sometimes act as my guide. In addition to the modelling, I work as a facilitator with the Africa's Voices Foundation in Kakuma and I also work as a photographer for the Youth Voices in Kakuma YVK. In order to achieve my dream, I would love to move to Paris in France because most of the modelling activities are done there. I will never forget Kakuma no matter where I go or even after achieving my dreams because it made me become who I am. Kakuma will always be a significant place in my memories because it is the place that I started realizing my modelling talent. This place is good. It is secured and has much freedom. One has the freedom of realizing and working on his/her talent. However, the only challenge in Kakuma is that there are so many talents but those talents are 'locked', in other words, those talents have little or no support and therefore end up vanishing like the wind in the atmosphere. Being a refugee is just a status that most people misinterpret. I think refugees have what it takes to be great people. They have dreams and talents like others and they can achieve them if they seize any chance around them. I am Kakuma and I am proud of Kakuma. Interested to get into contact with Biliny?
