Separated by civil war from his mother he now inspires the crowds with his acrobatics. “Thank you UNHCR!”
Civil war separated me from my mother in South Sudan when I still was a baby. Now I inspire crowds in a refugee camp with my acrobatics. And I love it. Thank you for letting us be, UNHCR! My name is Buay, mostly known by my street name Mayub. I am 17 and South Sudanese. I came to Kakuma at a very young age. When the war reached our village, I was literally still baby. Soldiers burnt our village. I got separated from my mother that very dark day. A man took me as his and brought me to Kakuma. I was raised by fosters till I turned twelve. Now in the camp, I can say I am a grown up. Thanks to the Almighty for granting me with the chance to live on! After joining primary school, I learnt that I had a special skill, something I had only shared with myself. My class teacher was the first to notice. It was when we had to go to the field for physical training that I failed to play with the ball but turned out to be very good in jumping. I then specialised in Summersault and the attention of the crowds shifted to me. I went on to make acrobatics and gymnastics my future goal. I started to train by watching acrobats on screen and copying what I had seen. I got inspiration from American Got Talent that I could watch whenever I got access to the Jesuit World Learning center in Kakuma. We were issued with laptops to learn, so I could always Google and surf acrobatics latest videos. That's what I did for most part of my time. Thank you JWL for the support! Now I am fit and so I do train a lot of young ambitious children who want to join the game. I do this with passion and generosity. I am there for everyone who is interested I acrobatics in Kakuma. I am still improving my skills and without doubt I shall reach the world stage! With acrobatics, people also in Kakuma, can still compete with those elsewhere. Now I am in Kakuma, and this is my home. Respect to us the refugees would be more than welcome! Thank you for letting us be, UNHCR!
