Lost Boy Sultan ignored the elders and now  has his own music studio in the refugee camp!
The elders forbid the young Lost Boys in refugee camp Kakuma to focuss on music. The Lost Boys should work for school in stead! But I stayed focused on music and now I have my own studio and YouTube channel and I already helped over thirty young artists! My name is John Etiman Lalu. But in music they call me Sultan, leader. I am 24 years. I am from Nuba Mountains, Sudan. I am single. I fled from Sudan in 2005 because of war. My village was attacked by Arab soldiers when I was 9. The entire village was terrified by the massive killings and destruction. I got separated from my parents in the dark night and ran into the forest. I hided there for days. I almost starved to death. I saw lions. And I didnt believe we would survive. Then I started walking. I did not really understand where the world was taking me without my parents. I only saw strangers and I realised I was totally lost. I was indeed traumatized. But, luckily on the third day we arrived at an airstrip with an aeroplane that was ferrying displaced persons to the UNHCR camp in Lokichogio. It was through God’s will that we were saved from the verge of death. We stayed in Lokichogio for two months and were then transferred to the Kakuma regugee camp. I decided to live with twelve other lost boys. But in the end they all went back to Nuba Mountains and I stayed behind. Since I wanted to develop my music career in Kakuma. I joined school and successfully finished primary ad secondary education and the primary teachers education training. I am a primary eacher in Kakuma now, employed by the Lutheran World Federation. But I like acting and music most. I started acting in 2011 and performed at many occasions. But my friend Boniface inspired me to become a musician. He is a good musician himself and believed in my abilities to become a great musician. I started singing and I wrote many songs in 2016. But lack of money made it difficult to produce my own songs. So I decided to get other Lost Boys involved who were also interested in music. This was the toughest time for me because the elders from my community were against those young boys becoming musicians. They wanted the Lost Boys focus on their education only. We wrote two dancehall songs but did not got them produced for several months due to our elders. We never gave up though and we worked on our talents. We went to Dezaia, a producer from Burundi, and in return for fencing his compound he produced our first songs. And in return for digging him a pit latrine he produced three more songs. I then considered starting our own studio. But unfortunately my colleagues decided to focus on studies first and others just gave up because we were receiving only little money from the music. I remained focused though and always attended ceremonies, celebrations and parties. I begged the masters of ceremonies to let me perform. And so I became well known in Kakuma. Today I get support from fans. I bought a laptop, a speaker, and software machine with the money I saved from my verry small incentive salary from my teachership. And I turned my own house into a studio and named it Muchezzo Family Production. And I have now my own YouTube channel: Muchezzo Family Production. This Studio is supporting me in so many ways. I use it to produce my songs. But I also use it to produce songs of other young talented artists in Kakuma at the lower price. The cost for producing a song in my studio is half of the cost used in other studios to produce at an affordable price, because I know how hard it is for other young artists to get money for producing songs. I understand how painful it is to write a song without being able to afford producing it. I also know how stressful it used to be when you dream of being a musician and it seems impossible because of lack of money. I have experienced these situations and I want to make it possible for the youth in Kakuma to venture in music and follow their dreams. I have already helped over thirty young artists in Kakuma and their lives have improved. I feel happy when I see them successful in life. I want to continue supporting them through my studio.
