I am a religious leader
in Kakuma-One
I have been a religious leader now for more than nine years. I teach the young ones Islamic Law and the correct values and norms of society. Becaused they are the foundation of our future, the next generation. My name is Abdiweli Mohammed. I came to kakuma in 2007, all the way from Somilia. I am the 'Imamu' (the reverent in Muslim) in one of the mosques in Kakuma. I was a victim of Al-shaabab. I fled from the war in Somali and was smuggled into Kenya. I stay with my single mother and siblings in the neighbourhood ‘Kakuma-One’ of the refugee camp, where I am this religious leader. My teachings give the young people insights in how to understand their world. And it gives them purpose in life. I have struggled ever since I was a teenager, to help my mother in safeguarding the needs of our household. I went through formal learning and did computer science as well. Despite of living far-away from my father, I really reflect a manly image over the years down the line. There are times though I could cry, when I see my mother secretly crying in her efforts to fight for us. At these moments I would get up and go into the neighborhood to ask for a job. This is how I decided to teach the young once, because they are the foundation of our future, the next generation
