Talented painter
stuck in a refugee camp
My primary school teachers already noticed my talents. Now I want to become the best painter in the world. I want to get out of this refugee camp for the sake of my family and my career.

My name is Emmanuel Victor, 30 years old. I am married to Siwa Kashindi and I have one son, Faraja. My country of origin is the Democratic Republic of Congo. Due to insecurity I moved into Kakuma Refugee camp in the year 2011. My family and I were afraid of losing our lives. I am talented in drawing and painting. I am also a singer. I sing Rhumba music. Rhumba is a popular genre among the Congloses people. In primary school my teachers noticed my abilities in sketching and drawing. They encouraged me to continue practicing. My parents eventually sent me to Tanzania for three years to improve my drawing and painting skills. Now, I use this gift of painting and drawing to supplement the food ration provided by UNHCR to me and my family. I love my wife and kid, so I spend all my free time with them. I do know of other young people who are talented in art and I usually assist them to grow their talent. I want to become the best cartoonist and painter in the world. I want to use this God given talent to help my family and to be known all over the world. I will remain focused on my work to make sure that I accomplish this dream. For the sake of my family that is undergoing the pain of escaping the DRC, and by the mercy of God, I will achieve this goal one day! I love painting because through it, I am able to inspire others in the community. I use it to help the community by painting and drawing sign boards. Sometimes I get assignments from the host communities in Kakuma town. I charge them according to their capabilities and the size of work that is involved. I prefer to move abroad for the sake of my family and to improve my career. There are a lot of challenges facing my career here in the camp. For instance, not all the artwork that I make has a market here. In addition, it is difficult to get my painting materials in the local hardware shops. Mostly, I have to send money to Nairobi to purchase the materials over there. That is not cheap. The world should know that refugees are not proud of living in a refuge camp. I wish to see refugees live better lives and in better places in the future, so that they no longer suffer.
